About the Goal Planning Calculator

Most people invest a number that feels right and hope it is enough. Goal planning works the other way: fix the target and the date, adjust for inflation, and solve for the monthly investment that actually gets you there.

The inflation adjustment is what makes the answer honest. A ₹50 lakh education cost today is closer to ₹90 lakh in ten years at 6% inflation, and planning against the ₹50 lakh figure guarantees a shortfall exactly when you need the money.

The formula

Target = Goal × (1 + inflation)^n, then SIP = (Target − existing corpus grown) ÷ SIP growth factor
Growth factor[((1+i)^n − 1) ÷ i] × (1+i)
iMonthly expected return

Existing savings are grown at the same expected return and netted off the target first.

Things worth knowing

1
Use 6% inflation for general goals, but 8–10% for education and healthcare, which inflate faster.
2
Review the plan yearly. A missed year needs a larger catch-up than most people expect.
3
Goals within three years belong in debt funds or deposits, not equity, regardless of what the return assumption says.

Frequently asked questions

At 12% over fifteen years, roughly ₹20,000 a month. Over ten years it is closer to ₹43,000, and over twenty years about ₹10,000. Time does far more of the work than the amount does.

Because the cost of the thing you are saving for rises too. Planning against today's price guarantees a shortfall — the adjusted target is what you actually need on the day.
